This is a fun new addition to our range of brassicas – it’s a cross between sprouts, kale and purple sprouting broccoli! An attractive plant with a mix of purple and green tones, this will give you a good supply of kale-like leaves throughout the winter and then a secondary supply of outer leaves in early spring as well. It is easy to grow and can be planted in sun or semi shaded areas. For hints and tips our plug plants arrive with a handy growing guide.

In the kitchen: The best way to retain the amazing health properties of kale is to steam the leaves. However it can also be sauteed, braised, roasted and stir fried making it an extremely versatile vegetable to use.

Sweet Potato – Vineland Early Orange

This tends to be a high yielding variety, and the sweet potatoes look exactly as you’d expect with bright orange flesh and thick red skin. Sweet potatoes will grow best in a greenhouse or polytunnel and will produce many tubers, but if you have a real suntrap of a garden, you could happily plant them outside in well draining soil. For container growing, choose nice deep pots, at least 50cm deep.

In the kitchen: A great addition to curries and stews. Sweet potato can be roasted to bring out the sweet caramelised flavour or mashed for a delicious alternative to mash potato.

Carrots – Chantenay Red Cored

There’s just something about the shape and colour of Chantenay carrots that makes them so appealing and pleasing to harvest. As the name suggests, these are a lovely deep red-orange in the centre. Growing Chantenay carrots from plug plants is really easy – the plants will arrive in biodegradable pots and you can simply plant them into well dug soil or containers. Courgette – Summer Holiday

A perfectly round courgette with bright yellow, striped skin. They grow well in dry conditions making them an excellent choice for summer planting. Choose a sunny spot secluded from the wind. The courgettes can be harvested at any stage of growing, as baby courgettes or full size – all the advice you need is in the growing guide that comes with the plants.

In the kitchen: Baby courgettes are great for BBQs, simply thread onto skewers and grill. For more mature courgettes, try chopping and sauteeing. They are the perfect shape for stuffing.

French Bean – Yard Long

These brilliantly long French Beans are so easy to grow from plug plants, however they will need full sunshine so make sure you position them well, or you could grow them in a polytunnel/greenhouse. They can be grown in large pots or beds and will need a 2m tall wigwam structure or other bean support to climb. Harvest the yard long beans in late summer. Some say that the beans have a slightly aspargus-like flavour, and in other parts of the world they are called Asparagus Beans.

Kalibos Red (Red Pointed Cabbage)

The Kalibos Red Cabbage is a lovely addition to the garden, best known for its distinctive red/purple colour and pointed shape. It has a sweet flavour making it great for shredding and adding to salads and slaws. It tends to be slow to bolt, making it a good choice for summer planting. It is fairly quick growing and should be ready for harvesting in late autumn or early winter.Number of plants: 10 plug plants

In the kitchen: This variety of cabbage is perfect for shredding into a tasty slaw or can be used in a stir fry or braised in the usual way to accompany winter roasts!

Producing petite crunchy lettuce with red leaves, these lettuce plants can be grown alongside other vegetables as they are very space efficient. Just pop them in any gaps that have come up in your plot. They are excellent for summer growing as they are fairly resistant to bolting. Best harvested whole when they are mature. The plug plants arrive in plastic-free packaging together with a complete growing guide.

Growing your own peas can be one of the most rewarding plants in your garden! They taste SO much better homegrown… frozen peas from the supermarket are no match for these delicious pops of flavour! These dinky plants are ideal for pots. They will produce full sized pea pods, even though the plant is tiny, so they are perfect for a small garden. An excellent addition for summer growing, and they’ll cope well when the weather turns colder in autumn too. They are very easy to grow from plug plants, just follow the advice in the growing guide provided with the plants. In late summer – plant in a greenhouse.

Brussels Sprouts – Red Ball

This variety of brussels sprout puts a fun twist on the traditional winter vegetable. The red sprouts retain their colour when steamed and taste slightly sweeter than the green variety. They cope well in cold weather and deepen their colour after the first frost appears – they’re best harvested after that but can be harvested anytime from November to January. Best for raised beds/traditional plots, and perfect for planting in summer for Christmas harvests. Sometimes known as Globe Carrots due to their roundness, this variety is a little different from your standard garden carrot. They are a fantastic addition to the kitchen garden in summer, a good way of plugging gaps where you may have already harvested, and an excellent way of topping up your Vitamin A when you eat them! They will arrive as plug plants ready for you to plant out straight away, can be grown in the ground or in containers and are not particularly fussy about the climate conditions. This variety is lovely and sweet in flavour, and tends to grow quite long providing the roots are not disturbed. Our plug plants come in biodegradable pots and we would recommend planting them like this to avoid disturbing the roots. Mangetout Pea – Shiraz

Add some colour to your veg patch this summer with purple mangetout peas. With its deep purple pods and beautiful two colour flowers, this plant looks as good as it tastes. It produces sweet, crunchy pods perfect for cooking or eating raw. They will need pea sticks or netting to scramble up as they grow. We’re excited to offer Amaranth Red Army as plug plants this year. You can enjoy the red leaves as micro leaves, cutting them very young to add a splash of colour to salad. Or you can wait a little longer and harvest larger leaves individually, or, and arguably the best option, wait until it reaches full height and produces striking flower spikes for cutting.

These are fast growing plants that produce two-toned red/purple leaves through summer.
