If you’ve lost a few plants over the past couple of weeks, don’t despair – there is still time to try again. Beans, squashes, cucumbers and peas may well have struggled, but you can replant over the next few weeks and enjoy a good crop this summer.
Plants that may have struggled with the colder weather this May:
- Cucumber
- Tomato
- Beans (French/Runner/Borlotti)
- Squash/Pumpkin/Courgette
- Peas
- Sweetcorn
- Chilli/Pepper/Aubergine
When to replant
You can easily replant any time between now and mid-June, and the plants will still have time to grow and ripen before autumn comes to an end.
What if it’s a bit later than that?
If you don’t re-plant until late June, and you are concerned that plants are running out of time, you can always pinch out a few fruits/vines so that the plant concentrates on ripening the fruits that are growing – this would work particularly well of, say, winter squash and tomatoes. Also, think about planting in a warmer position, either in a polytunnel or under polythene/fleece to give the plants a bit of a growth spurt.
