    This variety of brussels sprout puts a fun twist on the traditional winter vegetable. The red sprouts retain their colour when steamed and taste slightly sweeter than the green variety. They cope well in cold weather and deepen their colour after the first frost appears – they’re best harvested after that but can be harvested anytime from November to January.     Sometimes known as Globe Carrots due to their roundness, this variety is a little different from your standard garden carrot. They will arrive as plug plants ready for you to plant out straight away, can be grown in the ground or in containers and are not particularly fussy about the climate conditions.     It’s so pleasing to pull up a bunch of deep purple carrots from the ground. The flesh is purple too and the colour stays when cooked. This variety is lovely and sweet in flavour, and tends to grow quite long providing the roots are not disturbed. Our plug plants come in biodegradable pots and we would recommend planting them like this to avoid disturbing the roots.     An easy to grow variety of celery
    This variety of celery forms crisp green stalks. It doesn’t need to be blanched as it grows – it is a ‘self-blanching’ variety. If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry, because all it basically means is that you don’t need to do anything other than pop the plants in the ground and keep them well watered throughout the growing season. There is loads of advice in the growing guide that comes with the plug plants.

    In the kitchen: Delicious used raw in salads, or for using to dip into hummus. Celery is equally delicious if braised or chopped in casseroles or a fish pie, adding a different texture to your dish. Use the leaves and any older tougher stalks to make stock.

    Uses: Comfrey should not be eaten. Comfrey is however wonderful used for grazes, bruising and stings. Pick a leaf, spit on it, rub it between the palms till it starts breaking up, then rub on the affected area.

    Commonly known as Yarrow, this pearl variety of Achillea produces double heads of white button-like flowers. Leave 30-40cm between plants. It should flower from June to September.

    Achillea, or Yarrow as it is commonly known, produces flat heads of clustered flowers.
