They grow quite quickly during the spring and summer months too so you’ll be able to plant something else in their place later in the season. Growing spring onions from our plug plants is very easy – just pop them in your veg plot when your plants arrive – a complete growing guide will be provided with your plant delivery.

This time of year can be very wet, and these little guys don't like to stay soggy! If you're not ready to plant yet: Don't worry if the ground is covered in snow, or rock solid from cold frosts. You still have several weeks to plant out. For the time being you can keep onion/shallot sets and garlic bulbs in a cool, dry/airy place until the soil is easier to work with (take them out of the paper bags that they arrive in as they need air to circulate around them). Ideally you need to get them in the ground by mid/late March. Choose the right site: All these plants are part of the allium family, and will all benefit from:

Lots of sunlight/warmth - they won't do well in cool, shady areas
Well-draining soil - these plants will not do well in soil that stays soggy.
Fertile soil - add plenty of compost before you plant them

Planting:

Plant them 10cm apart in pots/containers or traditional/raised beds
Push each onion/shallot set into the soil so that the tip is just at the surface. Make sure the pointy end is pointing up, and the hairy/rooty end is pointing down! Firm in quite well.
Separate your garlic bulbs into cloves. The bigger, fatter cloves grow better, so if you are short on space, prioritise those. Push each clove (pointy end pointing up) into the ground to twice their depth. e.g., if the garlic clove is 2.5cm, you push it down to 5cm deep. Leave the soil a little looser for garlic.

One minute it has turned cold, wet and windy, then next it seems that summer is back, and then it's up and down like a yo-yo for a few weeks before settling into quite a mild and dry spell. To a leek, I imagine this can be very muddling. Should they put out flowers? Or fatten up for winter? Or just give up the ghost? Mine are all being somewhat indecisive, so I am keeping an eye on them. I've harvested several that were threatening to flower - you can tell because the middle of the plant starts to push up like a central stem. At this stage, it begins to toughen and before long a bud will form at the top and the central stem will become difficult to cut through with a knife - you'd have to peel off the outer leaf layers to cook them separately. My moral of this story is to check any leeks that you planted in spring and were hoping to harvest over winter as they may also be muddled and verging on flowering. Others are still doing okay, and as long as they don't suddenly bolt, they should then stand in the cold ground once temperatures start to drop properly. My word of advice for these, is to mulch them if you can to keep the soil temperature a little more consistent. It'll also help by keeping the ground from freezing in mid winter, which can make it difficult to dig them up. It's not obligatory, but it doesn't take long and is quite easy. What is meant by "thinning out"? Basically, some of the seeds that we sow are tiny, and when we sow these tiny seeds there will inevitably be more than one seed per pot (with bigger seeds, like beans, it's a lot easier to control). If they all germinate, then there will be more than one seedling growing per pot. Thinning out essentially means removing excess seedlings so that they are not competing for space. This gives the remaining seedlings a better chance of growing into decent sized, healthy plants. Do I have to thin out? No, you don't HAVE to thin out any of our plants; it's not mandatory. However, if you are someone who would rather grow one good sized beetroot instead of three smaller ones, or if you want your carrots to be nice and shapely rather than wonky and gnarled, then you may wish to take the time to thin them out before planting. How do I thin out? It is very straightforward to do. Simply inspect each plant before you pop it in the ground. If there is more than one growing, you can pinch off all but one with your fingernails (easiest), gently tease them out of the roots (not so easy as you may damage the root ball) or snip them off with a small pair of scissors (can be a bit fiddly). Once you have done this, you should be left with a single seedling growing and this can now be planted. Now the question....how do you choose which seedlings to remove? Well, usually there will be a clear frontrunner who possibly has greener leaves, more leaves or is simply a bit bigger. This is the one to keep. If you can't decide, don't lose too much time over it, and just remove the ones that are easiest to remove. Which plants are most likely to need thinning out?

It's worth casting a glance at other plants too, just in case, but on the whole it's only the above that sneak in the extras! What happens if I don't thin them out? Then they will simply grow together. For beetroot and carrots you may get smaller, misshapen roots at harvest but they are still edible of course. Leeks will be a bit smaller when you harvest them. To be honest, you will probably hardly notice if you don't thin out lettuces and leaves unless it is a hearting variety. [post_title] => Do I need to thin out before planting my veg?
