Hi, Tiny Gardener here! I wanted to introduce myself as the newest addition to the Rocket Gardens blog. I’m a busy working mum living in Cornwall and I haven’t grown a lot of veg before (and what I have has been with minimal success!), but I’m keen to learn and wanted to see how easy it is to grow from plug plants. Watch this space as I take you through my growing journey this spring and taking on the challenge of growing a kitchen garden in a tiny space.
I have a quite a small growing space outside the front door of my house, we’d built a raised bed a few years ago to plant flowers and fruit however, I was keen to see whether I could grow my own little kitchen garden in this space. The main raised bed is about 3m x 1m and we have two smaller ones off to the side. The soil is quite good quality as they were filled with top soil and compost when we built them but I decided to top it up with some organic compost specifically designed for growing veg just to give the plants the best start.
I had already prepared my beds for spring growing back in the Autumn, so I decided to plant a few things over the winter just to see how I got on. I have been growing Radish, Turnip, Pak Choi and Corn Salad.
As we get quite stormy weather here in Cornwall over the winter, I was advised to get myself a cloche to protect the plants from the weather. I was so relieved when it fit snuggly into my prepared bed. My plants arrived in the post and I popped them into their new home. After only a week or two the slugs had a good go at my Pak choi and unfortunately all of them were eventually eaten.
I was determined to carry on as the radish and turnip were holding on and the corn salad was growing well. I put a few beer traps in between the plants to deter the slugs and they’ve all faired reasonably well. I’m hopeful that the turnips and radish will have grown well and the corn salad is a triumph! The cloche seemed to provide the perfect winter growing environment for the young plants and protected it well from the succession of storms we’ve had too, it also protected them from being dug up by my cat!
Planning ahead, I’m looking at expanding my growing space with a few different sized pots and containers to include herbs and flowers too. I’m curious to find out how much I can grow from this tiny garden. I’ll be keeping you updated on my new tiny veg patch throughout this growing season.
