Harvesting winter salad leaves

You may find some salad leaves are growing surprisingly fast, especially if you planted them in early September and they’ve got their roots well established already. You should be able to harvest from mustard and mizuna plants quite often, treating them as cut and come again.

The easiest thing to do, for frills mustard, mizuna, land cress and other loose winter salad leaves is to simply cut across the plant, being careful to leave the growing point untouched. You’ll recognise it from its cluster of baby leaves at the centre – these baby leaves will continue growing until the plant naturally reaches its end when it produces flowers in spring.

You can also apply this to pak choi and tatsoi, which is a great way of keeping the plants going for longer, and extending your harvest period.

We also have a video you can watch that explains the cut & come again harvesting technique. It is a summer video, but it applies in autumn and winter too.
