Slow Growing Curly Kale – Diary of a Rocket Gardener

Just a quick one from me this week as I haven’t been out in the veg patch much other than to harvest a few greens here and there. My one observation is that my curly kale is growing much more slowly than the cavolo nero and the red russian kale. I thought it was worth mentioning because it is something that I notice every year during the winter – that where the cavolo nero and red russian are producing quite a lot for me to harvest, I’m still waiting for the little curly kale plants to catch up, and they often don’t do so until March.

It’s no bad thing, as I like having things a little staggered and it gives me something new to start harvesting, but if I wasn’t growing the other kale varieties, I might feel a little sad that they weren’t growing. I actually think that curly kale would be a good one to plant in a polytunnel over winter – I may plant a few in my mini cloche tunnel next year to see how they get on – or you could cover them with a cloche to help speed things up. I suspect they just need a little more daylight and warmth before they get going.

Anyway, like I said, it’s just a quick one – if your curly kale is growing slowly, don’t worry, it’s normal!

ps. Please ignore all the weeds – pretend you can’t see them!
