How to grow... Strawberries

Rocket Growing Guides

Strawberries will either arrive as plants in biodegradable pots (from spring to autumn) which you can plant or peel off and compost, or as bare-rooted runners (during winter).

How to Plant Strawberries

  • Plant strawberries in grow bags, containers, hanging baskets or beds that are in full sun and sheltered from the wind.
  • Dig in plenty of compost before planting.
  • Plant them 30cm apart (or one to a 25cm pot)

How to Grow Strawberries

  • As your plants begin to develop use straw to lay at the base of your plants to keep the emerging fruit off the soil.
  • Once fruits form, cover with netting to protect from birds.
  • Water regularly and be sure to harvest them as soon as the fruit turns perfectly red. They may benefit from a fortnightly liquid feed once they start to flower.
  • After the plants finish fruiting, they will start to put out runners. These are long shoots with baby plants growing off them at intervals. You can either cut these runners off or allow them to take root in the soil. Alternatively, you can carefully peg them into small pots filled with compost – leave them attached to the mother plant until the roots have established, and then you can cut them apart.
