Well, my plants arrived a little earlier than expected – I was hoping it would be next week (it actually still feels a little chilly to me – apparently there is a ‘heatwave’ coming though, so perhaps next week will be warmer.) Unfortunately, I don’t have time to plant them this weekend as I’m going away, and anyway, I haven’t finished getting my plot ready. I still have bean supports to build and have failed miserably to wash down the greenhouse windows. Those are the first jobs on my list for when I’m back.
I thought I would share a secret strategy with you all… in Rocket Gardens’ growing guide, they explain how to temporarily plant seedlings in a bag of compost if you can’t plant immediately. My own technique is even simpler, and I’ve done it time and time again, and so far it has always been successful.
I simply put all my plug plants into old roasting trays (shallow ones) in a centimetre of water. I’ll leave them in the roasting trays in the kitchen until I’m ready to plant, and just give them a little extra water from time to time. I’ve managed to keep them in good nick for at least a week or so by doing this in the past. It’s quick and un-faffy (if that’s a word!) and it has always worked for me. Of course, if you prefer to do it the official Rocket Gardens way, then do – I just thought I would throw it out there in case some of my readers are in a rush like me and don’t have time to get things sorted!
