Growing Guide - Courgette and Cucumber

Cucumber
Can be grown indoors or outdoors dependant upon variety but they generally do best in a greenhouse or at least under some sort of protection. They will grow on light soil as long as it is well manured. Plenty of moisture is required. They don’t like acid soil.

Keep the greenhouse humid but well aired. Make sure compost is moist but not waterlogged.

For the novice there is quite a bit to learn about growing cucumbers and so a good book is recommended try Joy Larkom’s Grow Your Own Vegetables

Courgettes (Marrows , Squashes and Pumpkins)
Courgettes are very prolific and a well grown plant can produce twenty or so courgettes. For this reason 3 – 4 plants is normally adequate for a household (unless of course you are extremely keen on courgettes – or like to make lots of chutney!)

Plant your Rocket Gardens seedlings approximately 3 feet (90cm) apart ideally using mulching film around the base of the plant which keeps down weeds, retains soil moisture and keeps growing courgettes off the earth - Click here for gardening Equipment

Smaller courgettes are more flavoursome. The fruits will grow extremely quickly almost overnight in some cases! Unless you want your courgettes to turn into marrows you should check and pick them regularly. Once the fruit becomes marrow sized productivity of the plant will slow dramatically
