Growing Guide - Beans and Peas

Broad Beans
Likes a rich free draining soil that is not too acidic. Space your plants approximately 10 inches (25cm) apart and firm in well.

Dwarf French Bean
Enjoys any soil provided it is not too heavy or acid. Make sure location is reasonably sunny and sheltered from high winds.

Plant seedlings approximately 10 inches (25cm) apart each way. Place a stick alongside each seedling to prop the plant up as it grows.

Water well during periods of dry weather.

Runner bean
There are various ways of growing runner beans. A wigwam or obelisk is a good way where space is at a premium. Or alternatively use bamboo canes approximately 8ft in length.

A rich, light, well drained soil with plenty of organic matter is ideal.

Water well during periods of dry weather.

Peas
Peas will grow best in a fertile well worked soil that is not too acidic. Peas do require support in order to grow effectively. Traditionally this takes on the form of a system of horizontal wires, strings or netting attached to posts or canes, or for an easy solution try our bean and pea netting. Space your Rocket Gardens pea plants 4 ½ inches (12cm) apart each way. Hoe regularly to keep weeds under control or alternatively use a mulching fabric when planting to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Click here for Gardening Equipment

A pod is ready for picking when it is well filled but there is still a little air space between each pea. Pick peas regularly because pods left too long maturing on the plant will reduce the overall yield considerably.

Pick mange tout varieties when they are about 3 inches (8cm) long and the peas are just beginning to develop.
